Canon law is the law of the church. Back then, the church's power was both religious and political. It was used against anyone in the church. It was to control the people of the medieval times, even kings. They had even set up courts to enforce the law of peoples conducts.

The things that would happen to a person, even a king, when disobeying the law would usually end up in excommunications and interdiction. For example, when the king doesn't obey the law, the king could be denied of salvation and releaved of his duties.
